Health Snapshot

Our region covers 956,438 km2 (55% of total land area of Queensland) of rural, remote and very remote areas. 

Home to 63,678 people, Western Queensland has 19.5% of the population (average 3.2% Australia-wide and 4.6% in Queensland) who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and 34 Aboriginal language groups. 

The population of the PHN has mixed health status with pockets of high advantage which are in direct contrast to large areas of extreme disadvantage. 

Primary Health Care

  • Seventeen (17) Primary Care Organisations, with 20 sites operating 1 of more days per week
    • Eight (8) Private Practices
    • Four (4) Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services operating from nine (9) sites
    • One (1) Royal Flying Doctor Service with two bases (2) bases operating from seventeen (17) sites plus mobile services
    • Three (3) Hospital and Health Services operating out of forty-one (41) sites
  • 32 Pharmacies
  • 8 Residential Aged Care Facilities (Permanent Residency)
  • 21 Home Care Providers

Indigenous Health Assessments

  • 19% of children up to 15 years of age in the region received Indigenous Health Assessments and
  • 30% of people over 55 years received Indigenous Health Assessments
